How Does The EGG Work?

The EGG machine is an EKG like device that records EGGs and consists of an amplifier with custom filters and a computer with proprietary software—the EGG Software Analysis System (EGGSAS).

An EGG Being Recorded

The interface device is really the white black box above. On it are three electrodes that attach to your body. They record the electrical activity of your stomach during digestion, just like an EKG records the electrical activity of your heart.

What's Going On?

Three electrodes, just like they use for an EKG are placed on your midsection. These detect when your nervous system sends the message to your upper digestive system to let things into and through your stomach. This is why you are asked to drink some water during the test.

An elastic band is placed around your chest with another detector which monitors your breathing. This allows the doctor to recognize when a change measured by the other electrodes may have been caused by something other than digestion; like if you shift position or even ask a question. This is why you are tested in a comfortable chair, in a quiet room, and asked to relax quietly during the test!
