Electrogastrogram Is
A Clinical Tool That is Constantly Breaking New Ground in Motility
Testing
An EGG is a non-invasive test of gastric
myoelectrical activity of the stomach. The EGG reflects the
stomach’s pacesetter potential activities, much like the
electrocardiogram (ECG) reflects electrical events occurring in the
heart. The performance of an EGG does not require pre-medication and
has no significant side effects. An Electrogastrogram allows the
physician to diagnose a gastric Dysrhythmia or document normal
gastric electrical activity. The EGG test provides the physician
with objective, physiological information to establish a more
definitive diagnosis. Clinicians are constantly finding the EGG test
to be useful in solving more and more undiagnosed problems. The most
recent application of this test has been in the field of Neonatal
diagnosis!
Evidence Supports the Use and
Effectiveness of an Electrogastrogram
An Electrogastrogram is indicated for patients
who have unexplained nausea, bloating, early satiety or other
dyspepsia symptoms. In its position paper on nausea and vomiting,
the American Gastroenterological Association included Electrogastrogram in its algorithm for the evaluation and management
of nausea.
Studies have shown that treating and eradicating gastric
dysrhythmias and establishing a normal 3-cpm gastric myoelectric
rhythm, not normalization of emptying rates, is
associated with
improvement in upper gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with
diabetic gastroparesis. Another study suggests that gastroparesis
(present in many patients with symptoms of functional
gastrointestinal disease) is associated with gastric dysrhythmias
and that prokinetic drugs can be
effective in re-establishing a normal gastric electrical rhythm.
